Nelson Abbey, 88

Highway Official Many Years Dies

Funeral services for Nelson Gage Abbey, 88, Randolph town highway superintendant 44 years prior to his retirement three years ago, were held at the Randolph Baptist Church Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. R. Leo Gathany officiating. Bearers were Walter Atwood, Harvey Blood, Maurice Buck, Van Benson Moore, James Keys and Glenn Mighells, and burial was in Randolph Cemetery

Mr. Abbey died Sunday at 8 a.m. in Byron's Convalescent and Nursing Home where he had been a patient for some time.

A native of Randolph, Mr. Abbey had been a farmer and later a fireman for the Standard Oil Company in Ohio before becoming town highway superintendent in 1909.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nellie Abbey; two sons, Walter Abbey of Randolph, present town highway superintendent, and Clarence Abbey of Kennedy; a sister, Mrs. Mary Van Rensselaer of Forestville; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Nellie Abbey

RANDOLPH — Mrs. Nellie Abbey, 92, died at 1 a.m. today (Aug. 16, 1963) at Machias. She was born Nov. 8, 1870, in Onoville, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Brown. Her husband, Nelson Abbey, who died Sept. 23, 1956, served as highway superintendent for the Town of Randolph for many years.

Surviving are two sons, Clarence Abbey, Kennedy, and Walter Abbey, Randolph; and 19 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hoitink Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomasl Long Jr., Randolph Baptist Chuch pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Randolph Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
