Theodore Edwin Button, a well known mechanical engineer and designer, died at his home in Schenectady, N. Y., on February 22. He was employed as an engineer and designer by the General Electric Co. Mr. Button was born in Waterford, N. Y., in 1844, and prepared for college in that city and at Greenwich, Conn. He graduated from Williams in 1866, and was immediately offered a professorship in mathematics at the Annapolis Naval Academy. Declining this offer, he entered into business with his father, who was one of the pioneer manufacturers of hand and steam tire engines in America. Here he displayed his mechanical genius in the perfection of many improvements, the first patent on the modern reciprocating type being issued in his name. In 1891, Mr. Button made his home in Schenectady, where he resided until his death.

Theodore Edwin Button, who died at Schenectady, N. Y., in March, sixty years old, was a son of Lysander Button, of Waterford, N. Y., one of the pioneer builders of hand and steam fire engines. He was graduated from Williams College in 1866 with special honors in mathematics and astronomy, and was offered a professorship in mathematics at Annapolis. He declined the offer and went into the fire-engine business with his father, inventing and perfecting many fundamental improvements. Mr. Button had lived in Schenectady the past fourteen years as a mechanical engineer and designer with the General Electric Company. Mr. Button had exceptional ability as an inventor and designer. The mechanism of the General Electric oil switches and circuit breakers was of his invention. A number of important patents were taken out by him and assigned to the company.

MRS. THEODORE EDWIN BUTTON.

Mrs. Theodore Edwin Button died Sunday night at her home, 69 Union avenue, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Button was born in Connersville, Indiana, January 9, 1852, and married the late Theodore Edwin Button, then of Waterford, January 31, 1871. In 1891 Mr. Button became identified with the Edison Electric company and moved to Schenectady. Mr. Button died February 22, 1905.

Mrs. Button is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Vrooman Steers and Miss Mary E. Button, one son, Scott Button, all of this city, two grandsons, Theodore Edwin Steers and William Vrooman Steers, one great-granddaughter, Corinne Frances Steers, all of East Orange, N. J.; a sister, Miss Martha Jane Scott, and two brothers, Alonzo F. Scott and David E. Scott, of Richmond, Indiana. A daughter, Martha Charlotte Button, died July 28, 1913.
