A telegram was received Mon. announcing the death of John Houston at Malta Bend, Mo. Mr. Houston was a brother of Hon. S. D. Houston and was uncle of Mrs. Luke Parsons and E. W. Blair.

At his home two and a half miles south of Malta Bend, John P. Houston, another of Saline's aged and highly esteemed citizens, died Monday, March 14th, 1898, at 6 a. m. He had been in poor health for several years and his death was not unexpected.
Mr. Houston was nearly 78 years old having been born April 25th, 1820, and moved to Saline from Ohio in 1868. He was a member of the M. E. church, South, and the influence of his faithful, consecrated life was felt by those with whom he came in contact.
The wife and ten children survive the husband and father. The latter are, Mesdames Wm. McNeely of Holden, Hattie Rankin, Burlington, Iowa; Florence McClelland, Nebraska; Elizabeth Irvine, Memphis, Tenn.; Mesdames Libbie Bicksler and W. S. Newell, Sherman, Lawrence, John and Grace Huston, Saline; Mrs. Hattie Rankin and husband of Burlington, Iowa are here, and the funeral has been postponed until Wednesday so that the other children from a distance can get here. The funeral services will take place from the residence at 2 p. m. Wednesday. Burial at Malta Bend cemetery.

MRS. ELLEN HOUSTON, another of Saline's old and prominent residents, died at the home of her son, Lawrence Houston, near Malta Bend, Friday afternoon, Jan. 26, at the advanced age of 82 years and seven months.
Mrs. Houston was born in Ireland, June 2nd, 1829. She came to America with her parents when she was two years old. The family settled in Pittsburgh, Penn., afterwards they located on a farm in Schuyler county, Ill. She was married to John Houston in 1851. To this union the following named children were born, Martha, dying in her youth, Mrs. Alice Newell Marshall, deceased. The surviving children are Mrs. Florence McClelend, Olathe, Kansas; Mrs. Elizabeth Bixler, Independence, Mo., Mrs. Belle Irvine, Fort Scott, Kas.; Mrs. Grace McRoberts, John L. Houston, Lawrence N. Houston and Sherman C. Houston of Malta Bend. She had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for over sixty years, living a consistent Christian life all these three score years and endearing herself to all who knew her. She was patient and resigned to the will of God throughout her sickness and died as she lived, in the triumphs of faith in the world's Redeemer. Her funeral took place Friday, Jan. 26th, at 3:15 o'clock p. m. The bereaved have the profound sympathy of the entire community. Her age was 82 years, 7 months and 24 days.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wm. Leatherman from her late residence and the interment was at Malta Bend cemetery followed by a large number of her friends.
