MARY ELLEN HOUSTON—The funeral of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Houston's little daughter, whose death we noted last week was held at the M. E. Church at Malta Bend Saturday March 11th, conducted by Rev. Carter of Appleton City, their former pastor. The little girl was 22 months old and was as a ray of sunshine in the home that has been saddened a second time by the angel of death in the past two years. Her death was caused by pneumonia. Quite a number of Marshall people attended the funeral. The parents have the community's sympathy.
Weekly Democrat-News, October 10, 191211202
The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Houston in the city and elsewhere were grieved and shocked to learn of the death of their baby daughter, Martha, which occurred Sunday, Oct. 6 at 9:15 a. m. The little girl who was born April 12, 1911 and was nearly 18 months old was only sick twenty-four hours. She was playing around the house on Saturday morning and was taken suddenly ill with auto inception, that went to the brain. Dr. Eakin of Malta Bend was summoned immediately and that night Dr. G. S. Hardin of this city was called in consultation. The little one was, however, unconscious when the latter reached the home and never regained consciousness.
A number of friends from here went to the house of mourning during the day on Sunday and a large number went today to attend the funeral, which took place from the home at 2 o'clock, after which the burial was in Malta Bend ceremony.
This great burden of sorrow rests heavily upon the parents, who have for the third time passed under this rod of affliction. Their first born, a boy only lived two days and a half, their second a bright beautiful girl baby, Ellen, lived only twenty months. Having lost these two little Martha's advent into the home was like a ray of sunshine and hope and the devoted parents have guarded jealously her health and the time of the mother has been given exclusively almost to the babe. She had been sick very little in her short life and was considered a very healthy child, until attacked with her fatal illness. The parents are almost crushed and heart-broken, but are trying to say from hearts bowed with grief: "Thy Will Be Done." May they be able to look beyond the little vacant chair and desolate home to the Eden land where the babe will grow to the perfect stature of the blessed. There is also comfort in the thought that the little life was theirs for even a brief springtime, for the joy and brightness of the few months, was a benediction in their home and will be always a sweet memory.
It was only week before last that Mrs. Houston with the baby daughter spent several days here with relatives and the mother was very happy in the thought of the child's continued good health. Mrs. Ed Guitar with her children and Mrs. George Parish and daughter spend several days at the Sherman home. The little ones had a good time and they were happy days for the mothers, little dreaming that the shadow of death for one of the children was hovering so near.
