Children of FLORENCE ANNA HOUSTON and JAMES MCCLELLAND:
Weekly Democrat-News, February 23, 192811215
James McClelland, eldest son of Samuel and Nancy Moorhead McClelland, was born October 19, 1846 in Holmes County, Ohio, and died after a brief illness from bronchial pneumonia, at his home near Olathe, Kas., February 2, 1928, in his eighty-second year.
In his youth he attended district school near Holmesville, Ohio and later Berea College. During the last year of the Civil War he joined the Ohio State Militia and served in the same.
In the year, 1867 he came with his parents to Saline County, Mo., with whom he lived until he established his own own. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Florence Houston of that county. To this union were born seven children.
Surviving him are Mrs. McClelland, Samuel Houston of Wilmar, Ark., James D., of Carlsbad, New Mex., Mrs. W. S. Davis of Alderwood Manor, Wash., Misses Esther, Belle and Alice of Olathe, and four grandchildren, John D., Florence, Joseph H. and Mary Elizabeth Davis, of Alderwood Manor, Wash. Nancy Ellen, the third child passed away in 1905.
In 1909 he came with his family to Olathe, Kas., from Missouri, which place has since been his home.
Mr. McClelland was born of Scotch-Irish parentage, whose ancestors settled in Pennsylvania before the War of the Revolution, and whose descendents have taken an active part in the development of the country.
A son of the soil and a true lover of nature, agriculture naturally became his lifetime occupation. Thru-out the many years he accepted the adversities of life bravely and uncomplainingly.
He was a man of original humor, ever a kind and gracious neighbor, interested in politics and the church, having been a member of the Methodist denomination since early youth.
Mr. McClelland was a quiet, home-living man of refined nature and high principles, fond of reading, and especially well informed on history and politics.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30, February 5, conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. W. Braden, who was assisted by Rev. C. B. Zonk, a former pastor, with interment in the Olathe cemetery. A large congregation attended, though the weather was inclement, representative of the respect and esteem with which he was regarded in his community.—Mirror, Olathe, Kas.
