When in 1863 the boiler at the tan yard of George S. Lowry on Montgomery creek, southwest of town blew up and one man—David Byerly, brother of the late Wesley Byerly—died from injuries received when he was blown up and came down in one of the scalding vats; Walter Lowry was blown several feet away and a wheel-barrow he was using was blown many feet in the air, his sister, Carrie Lowry, then 6, was covered up by falling brick and all that could be seen of her was a bunch of her hair sticking up between the pile of brick, and Thomas James. father of John James, former sheriff, was cut in the neck by a flying missile?
