WILLIAM C STRAW SR.

William Cecil Straw, Sr., 66, of 146 Bedford Street, died yesterday in Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since April 22.

Born in Davis, W. Va., he was a son of Mary (Montgomery) Straw of Cumberland and the late Bruce P. Straw.

He was a former grocery store owner and also operated the Silver Lanes Bowling Alley in Cresaptown.

Mr. Straw was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Cresaptown Eagles and a member of the Aerie's past president's club and United Commercial Travelers.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his widow, Mary (Wisman) Straw, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Malamphy, city; a son, William C. Straw, Jr., of Cumberland; two sisters, Mrs. Earl D. Chaney, city, and Mrs. William E. Hinkle, Hinkle Road; four brothers, Francis E. Straw, Jeannette, Pa.; John D. Straw and Jesse P. Straw, both of Cumberland, and James F. Straw, Hampstead, Md., and four grandchildren.

The body is at the Kight Funeral Home where friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Cancer Fund.

Services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home by Rev. W. Randolph Keefe Jr. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.

Cumberland, MD – Mary Ola Straw, 95, of Cumberland, MD, and residing at Lions Manor Nursing Home, died on Friday, February 7, 2003, at the WMHS Sacred Heart Campus Hospital, Cumberland, MD.

Born September 30, 1907, Cumberland, MD, she was the daughter of the late Otis C. Wisman and Sarah Elizabeth (Hite) Wisman. She was preceded in death by: her husband, William Cecil Straw, Sr., 1971; a sister, Zelia McCollough; a brother, Franklin A. Wisman; and a granddaughter, Sharon L. Schlossburg.

A graduate of Allegany High School, Class of 1925, and Frostburg Normal School, Mrs. Straw was a retired elementary school teacher in the Allegany County Public School System. She was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVIIth Century, the Daughters of American Revolution, Cresap Chapter, the Genealogical Society of Allegany County Maryland, the Palatines of America, Pennsylvania Chapter, and the AARP.

Mrs. Straw is survived by one son, William C. Straw, Jr., and wife, Carolyn, Cumberland, MD; a daughter, Mary E. Malamphy and husband, Hugh Malamphy, Ph.D., Cumberland, MD; three grandchildren, Dorothy Mae Miller and husband, Norman, Memphis, TN; William Russell Straw, Cumberland, MD; and Carolyn Elizabeth Greise and husband, Rob, Cumberland, MD; seven great grand children: Chad Greise, R.J. Greise, and Krista Greise, Cumberland, MD, Jenelle Straw and Jessica Straw, Cumberland, MD; Kevin Miller, San Antonio, TX; and Andrew Friend, Fort Bliss, TX; one great-great granddaughter: Diamond Ervin, Oakland, MD; and, three nieces: Vera J. Piper, Winchester, VA, Louise Lovell, Rockville, MD, and Florence Mills, Washington, DC.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A. 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD, on Sunday, February 9, 2003, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M., and 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, February 10, 2003, at 1:00 P.M., with Pastor Thomas Landaker officiating.

Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
