Sudden Death Of Mrs. Joseph W. Wallace Casts A Gloom Over The Entire Community

This community was saddened when the announcement came that Mrs. Joseph W. Wallace had passed away at the family home one-half mile north and one-half mile west of Graf, Sunday morning, April 15, at 4:00 a. m., death being the result of a second stroke of apoplexy. She had a stroke in November, 1921, and since that time the physicians had prepared the family for another stroke, but nevertheless her death was unexpected at this time and the shock to the family was great. Mrs. Wallace had been in fair health of late and was in Tecumseh until nearly ten o'clock Saturday night and on returning home, retired and slept well until two o'clock in the morning, when the stroke came and she lived only two hours.

Evia Hodges was born in Joliet, Ill. August 28, 1869 and died at the home near Graf, Nebraska, April 15, 1923, making her age 53 years, five months and seventeen days. At the age of four years she moved with her parents to Cass county, Missouri, where she grew to young womanhood and on June 1, 1886 she was married to Joseph W. Wallace, at Garden City, Mo. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace and these with the husband survive her. The children, in the order of ages are, Mrs. Ida Buey, Riverton, Nebr.; Earl Wallace, Weeping Water, Nebr.; Everett Wallace, Missouri Valley, Iowa; Mrs. Blanche Gravatt, Collis Minn.; Mrs. Ester Ackerson, Putney, S. Dak., and Valma Wallace, who lives at home. She also is survived by a sister, Mrs. William Irlan, of Brock and two brothers, John Hodges of Creighton, Mo., and Jared Hodges, Los Angeles, Calif. All of the children were here for the funeral and J. H. Wallace, a brother of Mr. Wallace, came from Kansas City.

Mr. ad Mrs. Wallace left Missouri in 1892 and moved to Talmage, Nebr., where they resided until sixteen years ago, when they moved to the farm which is still the home. The deceased was a member of the Graf Royal Neighbors and the Spring Creek kensington.

She united with the Methodist church at the age of fifteen years and has always been active in church work. Up to the time of her death she was at the head of the cradle roll department of the Graf Sunday school and the members are sure it will be hard to fill her place. As a church worker, neighbor, friend, mother and wife, she was always untiring, laboring always for the happiness of those about her.

Funeral services were held at the Graf church at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Phillip Smith, the attendance being large and the floral offerings profuse and beautiful. Interment was in the Grant cemetery, about three miles southwest of Talmage. The many friends mourn the death of a good woman and extend every sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

DEATH NOT EXPECTED

J. W. Wallace Passed Away in Omaha Hospital

Sick But Forty-Eight Hours With Hemorrhage of the Brain—Funeral Thursday

Because of the fact the he had not been sick the death of Joseph W. Wallace, whose home was on a farm northwest of Tecumseh, was a shock to his relatives and friends.

Mr. Wallace expired at an Omaha hospital, Tuesday morning, where he had been taken but a short time before, the gentleman being a victim of hemorrhage of the brain, and his final illness being of but forty-eight hours duration. Mr. Wallace was aged seventy years, one month and thirteen days.

Joseph William Wallace was born near Joliet, Henry county, Ills., March 4, 1964. When he was a boy the family moved to Cass county, Mo., where the earlier years of his life were spent, where he attended the common school, and where, on June 1, 1886, he was married to Miss Eva Hodges, the nuptials being at Harrisonville. They came to Nebraska and located in the Talmage section in 1892, and came to Johnson county in 1907. Mrs. Wallace departed this life on April 15, 1923. The six children surviving are Mrs. Ida Bucy of Brock, G. Earl Wallace of Weeping Water, R. E. Wallace of Omaha, Mrs. Blanche Gravett of Collis, Minn., Mrs. Esther Ackerson of Columbia, S. D., and Mrs. Velma Hickey of Tecumseh. There are three brothers: Henry Wallace of Kansas City, Mo., and G. W. and Grant Wallace, both of California. Mr. Wallace's second marriage was with Mrs. Clara E. Jones of Tecumseh, on March 1, 1927, and his wife survives. Mr. Wallace had always been a farmer. He had been a member of the Methodist church for many years, retaining his membership to the end, and for thirty-two years he had held membership with the Modern Woodman of American Lodge. His disposition was bright and optimistic, and character above reproach, and he was held in the very highest of esteem by all who knew him. Mrs. Wallace and the other relatives have the sympathy of their friends.

There will be a short service at the house, after which the funeral will be held at the Methodist church in Graf, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The services will be conducted by Rev. Ray S. True of Tecumseh, pastor of the Methodist churches of Graf and this place. The interment will be in the Grant cemetery near Talmage.
